Final sentencing for Paul Manafort today

personally I'm not for throwing the book at him on this last phase as some sort of revenge or example sentencing

the arguments will be over taking responsibility vs the role he played

These couple years of court for white collar crimes are punishments within themselves. You take the money, you stop the crime, you destroy the reputation (deserved) as an anti-cage person I can't see much benefit in long or max prison sentences for these types of criminals

The guy got wrecked and he deserved it but I'm not gonna support life sentences for these old dirtballs

let them have a chance at dying at home with whoever will still stick around them after they have been exposed. To me the real punishment is the process. Throw a little time in there and let him die at home in shame and embarrassment with debt

I somewhat agree... the government is taking a ton of money from him and he'll still spend a long time in prison. Still, it's problematic that he hasn't taken responsibility. He witness tampered, and then he lied multiple times after agreeing to cooperate.

What's more outrageous about our justice system is not short time for white collar crime... but long time for other non-violent crimes like dealing.

While he shouldn't necessarily die in prison, 47 months is a slap on the wrist. We'll see what comes out of today's sentencing hearing.

In relation to what he could've gotten, sure. But 4 years is a long time, especially for an old man. I'm a bit of a bleeding heart when it comes to how long to lock human beings in a cage.

I know what you mean, especially in regards to sentencing terms for other crimes, however it’s easy to call 4 years in federal prison a slap on the wrist when it’s not you doing the time.

Amazing, really curious how much he will take in.

The revenge sentencing does not fix or help criminal justice reform in the right direction

neither does support lengthy or max sentencing or minimum sentencing

It's not about putting more rich white criminals in cages it's about putting less blue collar non violent criminals in cages

3 strikes law for misdemeanors and non-violent crimes is a product of Clinton (D) and California (D) 'idealism'. one of the (D) candidates for President, Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) loved to lock minorities up and permanently separate families for smoking weed in their spare time under this three strikes law as Deputy DA in the 1990s, even though she bragged about smoking weed while 'listening to Tupac and Snoop Dogg albums' during her college years in the mid-1980s

Judge Amy Berman Jackson: "Court is one of those places where facts still matter."

ABJ: “It’s not particularly persuasive to argue that an investigation hasn’t found anything when you lied to the investigators”

"It's hard to understand why an attorney would write that," judge says, about Manafort's defense team's approach. "No collusion" is "simply a non-sequitur."
“Any conspiracy, collusion... was not presented in this case," she said. "Therefore it was not resolved by this case."

I agree with that logic 100%, but manafort isn't the only cog in this investigation's wheel.

@Popehat

So that's 43 months additional time on top of the EDVA sentence, for a total of 90 months, or 7.5 years. He gets credit for time served, will get good-time credit of up to 15%, and may get additional credit under the new and untested First Step Act.

Seems reasonable.
