well look at the israel topic - the israeli intelligence had good information that hamas would attack however due to incompetence / arrogance they ignored it. stupidity explains quite alot of world events.
Oh, I don't dispute that it truly was incompetence/hubris - my point is just that this contradicts offthevoid's claim that the initial phase of the war wasn't due to Russian incompetence and instead went according to plan, more or less.

You’re being obtuse here. The surrounding of Kiev was exactly to try get the leadership in Kiev to collapse. That make take several weeks, months, to happen and wouldn’t happen in one or two days. So yeah you kind of need them to linger there for the threat to have some semblance of reality.
They needed to close the siege ring quickly to have any chance at success. When this failed, the whole attempt at choking Kyiv (and decapitating Ukraine this way) was doomed.

Russia won a world war sacrificing huge numbers. If there’s any one country that would know how many troops they’d need for a full invasion it’s probably them. Call it incompetence or what ever you want but fact of the matter no rational mind would consider 200k taking over a country of 44 million and a huge land mass as a full scale invasion.
We seem to have different understandings of what the term "full-scale invasion" means. You apparently only consider an attack or invasion to be full-scale if it contains all the troops and resources the attacker can theoretically muster in a total war-like scenario. I consider an attack to be full-scale if the attacker uses the big majority of his uncommitted military forces, and if the goal of the attack/invasion is to fully conquer the attacked country.
