Cells don't just magically take everything up from their environment. They are very selective about what gets inside them. That's why 99% of the foreign compounds you eat don't kill you. If your cells just took up everything from around them you would kill yourself every time you ate a plant, which has trillions of foreign compounds. Virtually everything would be a toxin at very low concentrations.
That's also why the mRNA is injected inside the lipid construct, to trick the cells into taking up the mRNA sequences. Otherwise the mRNA would sit in your tissue, get broken down, and then get absorbed as nucleotides. Finding a general way to introduce DNA or RNA into cells has been actively researched for over 20 years. I even worked on a process using fluorescent nanoparticles in my graduate school. It didn't work. But that's science for ya.
