I'd expect Ukraine would be able to retake some territory if the Russians are getting beaten so badly.. why haven't they?
I think this is the real reason: there is no meatgrinder, Russia has already achieved it's initial objectives in capturing most of Eastern Ukraine, and now they are fortifying their new borders & not launching more attacks. Ukraine must be able to mount a successful offensive, but they evidently do not have the ability, Russia is too fortified to attack
Right now Ukraine has to take the L and fortify their own lines instead of attempting offensives.
Russia had 6 months for fortify a defensive line and bed in new recruits. The Ukrainians are attempting manoeuvres that no NATO or Russian army for that matter, would attempt. Mainly because of the lack of air superiority.
Imagine the first gulf war, but instead of overwhelming air superiority the coalition have 5% of the air power the Iraqis had.
I personally was never convinced Ukraine could liberate substantial territory barring a massive Russian collapse of moral; What they have done is bring Crimea and Russian supply lines into range of Ukrainian missiles, and that is not negligible.
Also I didn't write the Russians are "getting beaten so badly" Those are your words. And an infantile description it is.
Are you watching any content from the Russian offensive in Avdiivka? Or are you basing your opinion on whether or not huge swathes of Ukraine is liberated from Russia? That's quite a narrow spectrum if that is the case.
I'd suggest you watch some recent footage for yourself, and then consider how you would describe what is going on.
