The more I read about how the US maintains its control around the world and how it stirs up civil wars wherever it can't, it seems increasingly pragmatic to me for countries like Russia and China to crackdown on freedom of speech to not allow that type of foreign subversion to continue
No, it's certainly not unwarranted and they have plenty of enemies trying to subvert them.
It's about being self-consistent. You cannot support restriction of speech in one scenario and denounce it in the other, full stop. It's just straight inconsistent hypocrisy. Either you support freedom of speech or you don't - picking and choosing who gets to censor people is just taking sides i.e. war.
