Yes, but one should make a distinction between Ukranian Independence / Nationalism movement that started even before Nazis existed after the break up of the Russian Empire with the likes of Konovalets and UVO.
UPA / Independence Fighters coexisted with Waffen SS and collaborated, but were not part each other.
However we are not discussing Ukranian Nationalism or Independence fighters, who’s name was unfortunately irreparably tainted by Bandera and Shukhevich through their collaborations with Nazis.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukrainian_Insurgent_ArmyWe are now talking about people who
volunteered to join Waffen SS. Yes, that Waffen SS. The Germans. The racial purity stuff, the
lebensraum stuff.
All eyes on Zelenskyy as he is now in a tight spot as Canadian Jews are crying foul about Waffen SS and he cannot really condemn that guy as he will face repercussions domestically from the like of Biletsky and domestic far right. It’s an uneasy alliance he is making domestically and I do not envy him.

I would say that it is convenient to connect that dude with the crimes of Nazi Germany and the SS because he clearly volunteered to fight with them against the Soviets; I don't think it would ever be that simple in reality.
I could be wrong but I doubt the SS were providing manifestos to potential recruits explaining how they will be gassing people in exacting their final solution.
Equally possible the guy could have known perfectly well.
I still think it's fair to assume an Ukrainian given the chance to fight against the Soviets around 1941 would have been highly motivated by the recent genocide of some 5 million Ukrainians by the Soviets.
And been willing to accept that the third reich were sadists but the lesser of two evils at that moment, from their perspective.
That is just speculation of course, but reasonable nonetheless.
At the very least its a gaffe from Zelensky and Trudeau, one that could offend alot of people.
And not something any critics of Zelensky or Trudeau would ever pass up as an opportunity to exploit.
