in reality, the conflict in donbas started when russian unmarked troops, as well as kremlin funded russian nationalists staged an uprising and started occupying administrative buildings, with the obvious goal to create a situation that would "justify" a russian military intervention, or a fake referendum to make those regions de facto russian territories. i mean it's not like russia hadn't done the EXACT SAME THING in crimea prior, or in georgia and chechnya before that.
