I already get mad when people send pets to shelters because they decided on a whim that getting a dog or cat would be cool, I'll admit this story makes me upset as fuck. Pets and kids react exactly the same in this situation, they don't have the capacity and/or all the life knowledge to understand that it's not their fault at all. But they'll still internalize this shit and think "My family didn't want me, I must've been bad" doubly so with an autistic child.
