How exactly would Russia's chance of survival improve by using a nuclear first strike in Ukraine though? Just packing their bags and going home is still an option for them. It's not like NATO will immediately prepare a large-scale invasion of mainland Russia in that scenario. If they escalate with nukes, however, the likelihood of retaliatory nukes landing on Russian cities or military sites increases drastically.

This has been discussed at length here in this topic, but the main problem is DU ammunition fires from blown up ammo depots or tanks etc. UN officially condemns use of DU ammo following investigations into DU after recent decade of conflicts. Modern NATO tanks use tungsten ammo that is better, non-radioactive, but also more expensive than DU.

Needless to say no one is going to clean up or remediate exploded DU from Ukranian soil, so people that dump old DU ammo into the country are potentially exposing generations of people in Europe and Africa that will eat Grains and Corn grown in the fields where DU has burned and left its traces. Russians stated that they do not use DU in this conflict.

Good thing is that our resident frenchman here has promised to eat croissants made from irradiated grain if that helps defeat the Russians, so let’s see if he follows through on that promise.

Its not about winning, its about MAD - Mutually Assured Destruction. The concept goes "back off or we will nuke you. Yes you will nuke us too, but no one gets to win then, so consider what you are doing before we kill each other". basically the conversation that India and Pakistan had before the US told them they were nuts and managed to dial it back (in this regard, thx USA). same conversation re: Cuba.
