The U.S. spent only 5% of their annual defense budget on Ukraine (including non-military assistance) for various reasons, but one of them could be:
To not humiliate Russia but, instead, slowly diminish it, expecting a regime change, and keeping it more or less in one piece (or at least different stable pieces). Like a "peaceful" euthanasia.

There's also the problem of these 15% of hard core russians who are personally profiting from this regime and are supporting it for this reason: Will they continue to support it once the country will be more or less ruined ? I'm not sure.

The US and UK were bound to security assurances to Ukraine as per the Budapest memorandum, equally was Russia; When Ukraine agreed to give up its nuclear weapons leftover after the collapse USSR.
It was inevitable the the US and UK would support Ukraine in the event that Russia broke its obligations.

The irony is to hear shills complain that the west crossed Putin's redline in Ukraine. After Russia completely disregarded its own security assurances by supporting separatists in the Donbas and then invading Crimea.

IMHO Russia didn't join West for "2" reasons:
- U.S arrogance which was a bit too big at this time (an easy excuse since Russia could have simply joined Eu). Russian nationalists had influence here (FSB, Army?)
- A Russian elite who refused to lose/endanger its privileges, wealth, monopolies because of the integration into a relatively "fair" democratic economy.
That's it: In exchange of keeping his position Putin only worked for his elite (which includes hard line nationalists ofc)

I think Europe as a whole is still salty that their attempts at Empire were defeated by Russia not once but twice (Napoleon & Hitler)

And France is totally ungrateful for Russia's help in WWI (France wouldn't have won without them) and for their help in WWII (Anglo invasion of Europe wouldn't have been successful without Russia on the Eastern front)
