Nah, they still live better than 30 years ago. They're fighting for who is going to get the bigger piece of the pie. China's biggest problem since ancient times has been... surprise, surprise India. They could never expand past India. In ancient times, Indian army was really badass, in modern times, they still have more expandable forces than China and also possess nuclear weapons. The particular problem is only between island countries + Japan + Korea + China in the South China sea. Lots of trade is being conducted there, lots of fishing, too. China wants to gobble up most of it and control the trade by force.
That is true, I mean you have 1.3 Billion people to feed. The same will happen to India in future when their
PPP starts to grow above the United States. They will lay their stake in world affairs with force.
The Chinese, historically speaking always try to control their surroundings whether via diplomacy or by force. Force being the last step that they will take.
What they are doing now, is their own version of the
Monroe Doctrine.
So the key is , how are we smaller neighbors, Well as a Singaporean , how are we going to thread around these two elephants and avoid being stepped on and crushed when they start to fight.
