The 2 other in reality are solid blue for the next 30 years easily. So the balance of power in the Senate just went from 51-49 to 51-51. That's absolutely massive. And we know Republicans probably lose a few senate seats this time around so in reality its going to be something like 48-54. 2 Extra senate votes in the senate is massive.
All of these entities are represented in the house of reps fairly accurately but to me this is an attempt at a power grab in the senate, a pretty blatant one that like I said would make the senate be majority blue for a really long time.
Northern California, upstate NY, Southern Oregon, etc are also only represented by 1 branch out of the 2 tbh, despite paying high taxes, despite having electoral votes.
they aren't represented by 1/2 tho. they just dont have the votes. otherwise that logic drops us into places where over half of america isn't represented, and it just a bit of a moot point then.
barriers to representation via votes isnt the same as actual non representation, aka the thing we revolted because of against King George.
but just look at the last few senates and add 2 to democrats, results are world breaking:
115th Congress (2017-2019)
Majority Party: Republican (51 seats)
Minority Party: Democrat (47 seats)
Other Parties: 2 Independents (both caucused with the Democrats)
= gop mandate still
114th Congress (2015-2017)
Majority Party: Republican (54 seats)
Minority Party: Democrat (44 seats)
Other Parties: 2 Independents (both caucused with the Democrats)
= gop mandate still
113th Congress (2013-2015)
Majority Party: Democrat (53 seats)
Minority Party: Republican (45 seats)
Other Parties: 2 Independents (both caucused with the Democrats)
= dnc mandate, no super majority
112th Congress (2011-2013)
Majority Party: Democrat (51 seats)
Minority Party: Republican (47 seats)
Other Parties: 1 Independent; 1 Independent Democrat (both caucused with the Democrats)
= dnc mandate, no super majority
111th Congress (2009-2011)
Majority Party: Democrat (57 seats)
Minority Party: Republican (41 seats)
Other Parties: 1 Independent; 1 Independent Democrat (both caucused with the Democrats)
= dnc mandate, w/ super majority (note, they were already 59/60 to a super majority anyways)
110th Congress (2007-2009)
Majority Party: Democrat (49 seats)
Minority Party: Republican (49 seats)
Other Parties: 1 Independent; 1 Independent Democrat (both caucused with the Democrats)
= dnc mandate, no super majority
109th Congress (2005-2007)
Majority Party: Republican (55 seats)
Minority Party: Democrat (44 seats)
Other Parties: Independent (1 seat) (caucused with the Democrats)
= gop mandate still
and of course none of this happens in a vaccuum, who knows how many more seats the GOP could muster by fear mongering over a DC swamp takeover of senate and push a few purple states back into the redzone.
