What really baffles me is that they still prefer to engage in absurd mental gymnastics instead of finally admiting that the standard they applied to Kavanaugh and similar cases was a mistake.
Is it really that hard to admit that "#believeallwomen" and the concept of "guilty until proven innocent" that came with it was going too far?
The glaring hypocrisy is nicely summed up in this article:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/04/30/biden-gave-christine-blasey-ford-benefit-doubt-why-not-tara-reade/That's really the bottom line for me: Democrats owe Kavanaugh a fucking apology.
I 100% agree with that. While Kavanaugh handled himself in a disgraceful way, the way Feinstein and her staffed sabotaged the process was absolutely insane. I actually thought that she should be removed from that committee all together but that's just me.
I think the term "believe all women" is misconstrued in the same way "black lives matter" is misconstrued. With BLM, a lot of people interpreted it as "black lives matter more than all other lives" and the term "all lives matter" came about. It's all a matter of messaging though and you're not going to win that when it becomes hijacked for political purposes.
"Believe all women" really should be "Listen to all women" IMO. Given the history of sexual assault in this country, we really should listen to their stories and do thorough investigations when allegations come about. However, the court of public opinion is pretty fucking vicious so I'd prefer some sort of setup where people just don't know about it until you're much more certain. Justice is difficult to dispense.
