What's the Kremlin position on running away like dogs from Kyiv and Chernihiv, let me guess it was all part of the plan?
I'm talking to somebody who doesn't know the first thing about military tactics, so I know this is a waste of time, but here goes.
Russia never intended for the force they sent near Kiev to actually take the city. First of all, their numbers weren't high enough and secondly, they were not equipped for it.
What these forces were intended for was to tie up all the Ukrainian troops stationed near Kiev and force them to stay there in defense of the city as they were anticipating an attack.
The effect this had was to prevent these tied up Ukrainian soldiers from re-inforcing other fronts (specifically the Donbass.)From that perspective, the operation was a success. While all those Ukrainian soldiers were pinned down in various hotspots, Russian forces took control of the city of Izyum and have successfully locked a cauldron with some 60-80 thousand Ukrainian soldiers near Donetsk that are now totally encircled and without resupply.
From a political perspective, the Kiev operation may have been intended to put pressure on Zelensky and pals. But since Ze is a puppet who takes orders from Biden, this did not work. From the political perspective, this could be considered a minor, but not serious, failure.
What will happen next is a massive battle in Donbass which all the Russian forces are now focused on and some 60-80 thousand Ukrainian soldiers are highly likely to be completely eliminated, or surrendered.
