Ultimately, The West enabled and emboldened Ukraine, (and 2014 would be a key example of this) who had and continue to be oppressed by Russia (for decades). A break away from Russia was the desired effect and Ukraine sees this (and future wars with Russia) as enabling this. The west probably did not intend on Ukraine bombing the crap out of its own people for 7 years but I guess they saw that as collator damage.

For Ukraine this is a war to break away from oppression those who would deny them the right to forge their own path.

For everyone else (that matters), Ukraine is just a chess piece.
