If Democrats try to make DC a state then republicans in tons of blue states could push for similar things. Split California, with the north going conservative, split downstate NY including NYC with upstate going conservative and so on.

they could try but lets not pretend its the same thing. DC already isn't a state, or a part of another state's jurisdiction in the same way that Norcal is part of California state.

DC and Puerto Rico are more analogous here, especially as DC is a swamp and PR is impoverished but also a tax haven for some right winged people.

You can't change the rules that would obviously favor one side and will probably make the senate be blue for many years then say a similar alteration is not the same.

No DC is not similar to states splitting but they're both similar in the sense that it would upset a long established balance of power.

Personally I think whatever redistricting or splitting that happens needs to happen in an equitable way kind of like bogie suggested. If you want PR to come in which will obviously be a blue stronghold then let southern Oregon+ NCali be a thing.
