The views of the people are helpful, but ultimately what matters are the things we can measure objectively. No matter how understandable the Russian layman point of view is, there are still things that, when observed from the outside, are objectively bad or worse and i would still argue the West is less bad in almost all of these aspects. It's more of a black and grey type of situation rather than just shades of grey.
I believe we live in an infinite shade of grey. I don't subscribe to black and white, but I accept I may be a minority of this view. some closer to black and white ? sure. What I would say is that, broadly, the West is more prosperous, more open, there are better opportunities, better standards of living, less fear of starvation, oppression, freedom of expression, more freedoms, more rights, education, healthcare, etc etc etc etc. But to say that Russia, or Putin, is the bad guy, [ i.e. black ] and that there are absolutely no contributing factors, no redeeming qualities, no rationale or explanation other then that the word is "evil" attributed to them/him/it, is a very narrow view, which i cant subscribe to.
