You'd start peace talks because you have no flesh in the game. The counteroffensive could never accomplish an end to the war.
It could makes things extremely difficult for Russia in Crimea and domestically if things go badly for them. When I say badly, I mean even worse.

You're taking out the emo card to justify blood spilling on both sides. Exactly because I've got empathy and am not just a msm victim, I see no reason to spill even more blood of young Ukrainians/Russians if the target can't be achieved. They aren't just pawns of the war but sons/fathers and loved ones of a whole generation. It's easy to say for you to fight until the last man even though no reasonable progress can be made.
USA+Co. want Ukraine to fight in a guerilla like manner for years but Ukraine itself doesn't want to be a pawn only that's why they try to press for an offense. It works out as long as you've got numerical and material superiority. Afterwards, time for negotiations will be ripe.
