okay, so now russia blew up a dam, which was a critical water resource for territory they hold and the destruction would result in russian positions getting flooded more so than ukranian ones
makes total sense once again

Crimea was surviving 9 years without water supply from Kherson oblast so it's not the reason. Also the Russian controlled side of Dnipro is down the river. Probably the main strike of Ukrainian counteroffensive was aimed at both Kakhovska dam and Zaporizhzhia NPP. Otherwise there's no point at all for Russians to blow the dam.
iirc they had massive water problems though, especially in agriculture
