The World Health Organization (WHO) will no longer categorize being transgender as a “mental disorder”, after a major resolution to amend its health guidelines was approved May 25.

The United Nations’ health agency approved a resolution to remove “gender identity disorder” from its global manual of diagnoses, in a move that will have a “liberating effect on transgender people worldwide,” says Human Rights Watch. According to the newly-revised version of the International Classification of Diseases (known as ICD-11), published by the WHO, “gender identity disorders” have been reframed as “gender incongruence.” Gender nonconformity is now included in a chapter on sexual health, rather than being listed with “mental disorders” as was the case previously. Activists are now hoping that the ICD-11 will be implemented by the WHO’s 194 member states over the next three years.

for real tho, this seems like a kneejerk reaction to low IQ idiots using the "mental disorder" label to lazily troll them. i don't think the implications are noteworthy in any direction, i don't think this will stop any trans person from comitting suicide and I hope this doesn't stop any trans person from seeking help from a councilor if they're having a hard time. If anything it's a win for the meme hucksters on the alt right that will use this as proof that the left is antiscience and university level science is corrupted.

They would have succeeded, but for the fact that Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) objected on the House floor, preventing the legislation from being approved.

Speaking briefly on the House floor to make his objection to passing the disaster relief bill without a recorded vote of House members, Massie stated: “If the speaker of this House felt that this was must-pass legislation, the speaker of this House should have called a vote on this bill before sending every member of Congress on recess for ten days.”

While Massie’s action may just delay by a few days the House approving the legislation, his action can help ensure that the House meets its obligation of being a deliberative body in which all members, instead of a select subset of members, can vote on whether legislation is approved.
