I doubt that NATO countries would actually want Ukraine to become a member, not at this point. At the end of the day, virtually none of the populations of the West would be willing to send their own sons to go to war against Russia over a run-down shithole like Ukraine. Sending them weapons and financial aid to uphold the international order is okay. Trying to make an example out of Russia that revanchism will not be tolerated and fail to produce worthwhile outcomes for the aggressor, that's a cause majorities in the West can get behind. But it's not a cause we'd be willing to give our own lives for.

There's just no way I see the necessary unanimous consent for Ukraine's accession to NATO. Definitely not by Hungary, and Turkey under Erdogan would once again try to extort concessions like they did with Sweden. Meanwhile, Ukraine would be hung out to dry.


Imho, Ukrainian NATO membership is only an option if/when this war has come to an end and been in the rear view mirror for a couple of years. Definitely not while the war is still ongoing.
