Generational war trauma. We still have ww2 veterans here and many more raised by them. We have generations that remember the following decades of bowing to the Soviets under the guise of "non-alignment". We also, unfortunately, witness racism specifically directed towards Russians, mostly in conservative and nationalist circles and older people. The vast majority of men here are conscripted and it's a good simulation of how shitty warfare is. So yeah, this society hasn't fully recovered from the war.
Maybe poking the bear isn't the best strategy if you are all so scarred by your last encounter, I'm sure the fence will keep them at bay though
I wonder if Russia has any history with foreign powers invading through Ukraine that might evoke similar feelings lol.
As an expert on WW2, could you perhaps shed some light on that?
