Russians were asking Ukraine to be defenseless, to stop military cooperation with America.
This is basically asking to become slaves.
This is what Russia does since 18th century, first they disarm you, render you defenseless and then they take you either by military or you give up peacefully.
Russians needed 40mln Ukrainian people, because they dont have enough people themselves.
About 40% of the USSR production was in Ukraine.
Ukrainian great soil is also important as political strength, Africa needs it badly and Russia wants to have influence in Africa also.
It was very important to get control over Ukraine to rebuild USSR.

Well more to the point- Ukraine did not want to risk a confrontation with Russia, and rejected the NATO cooperation overture. That was the will of the democratic government of Ukraine, and the catalyst for a minority seizing power by force to side with NATO- backed and micromanaged by NATO.
I've said for some time that cynical calculation absolutely made sense for a pragmatic Ukrainian government even if they held ideals more aligned with the west and aspired to eventual western alliance. It was just a fact that Russia held more interest and will tp act on its own back yard and America betrays every pawn it exploits in the long run. This doesn't make Yanukovych a puppet, it makes him acting in Ukraine's rational self interest.

And now we can see exactly why. Look what NATO bought for Ukraine.

This is a prime example of opinion-based reasoning. You assume things and extrapolate.

None of these are facts.

How is stopping military cooperation with America equal to slavery? Will you be enslaved by America if you refuse? North or South America? Russia doesn’t have enough people for what? 40% of USSR production of what? Oil and gas?

Why would you double down on your opinion about rebuilding USSR? Literally nobody is asking for that. People are misquoting Putin constantly who once said, full quote:

Once the Union collapsed a lot of people who identified as Russian/Soviet ended up stranded in countries which they did not associate with (eg Africa) and they had nowhere to return as their parents died for instance. This was and is one of the greatest geopolitical tragedies.

This does not mean he is seeking to rebuild USSR.
