An important point to bear in mind when we compare to the Cuban missile crisis and first strike jupiter missiles upsetting the balance- we were still held in check by the number of Russia's launch sites far exceeding jupiter capabilities to knock them out, and more importantly the untargetable submarine launched missiles. The soviets already had enough SSBNs at that point to a
serve as a deterrant and the US had just introduced a few a year earlier.

At no point in the Cuban missile crisis was either side really put in a position where MAD was jeopardized. So when we're looking at escalations and a hot war in Ukraine where Russia is committed to reciprocal escalation, backing out not being an option, we're quite possibly closer to a nuclear showdown now than then. Simply because Russia could nuke Ukraine without triggering MAD with NATO. And we're playing a game were either Russia wins a conventional war or flips the table.

So it was in 2004, the opposant to pro-russian president candidate win, got poisoned. Okay.

TODAY: 80%+ of Ukrainians are supporting joining NATO right ? Isn't this a crushing majority ?

In other news Ukrainians have shown a video with Zaluzhny (or his body double ehehe!) quoting 25th of May - so it seems he is alive and well.

They actually had democratic elections until 2014. They don't anymore. Saying 80%+ support NATO is like saying 100% of Iraqis supported Saddam Hussein. Elections held as a unified country gave the pro Russian side the majority. Elections where half the country is disenfranchised, their party banned and their towns laid siege by the insurrectionists who took power by a violent coup- are obviously illegitimate and undemocratic.

Nobody has presented a counterargument to this since the Euromaidan no matter how many times I bring it up. The country had democratic elections, legitimate to all observers, and the west lost. They took power by a coup, and do not represent a majority of the country. Elections since then are farcical, with the most populous oblasts disenfranchised.

since 2004 ukraine had a CIA backed coup in 2014, it could be argued from that point on the country rapidly became ultra nationalist, and then war broke out. therefore I would be more inclined to land on the 2014 date as the starting point as compared to 2004.
