Not particularly. He always had politics in mind and I'm sure he met a lot of important people while being politically active at Harvard. He tried to run as DNC treasurer (I think that's what it was) and made more political connections that way.
He also wasn't showered with donations either...his campaign was REALLY small for MONTHS (he was one of the first to have an exploratory committee) and didn't really get much press (or money) until the first CNN town hall event.
Ultimately, what it boils down to...people simply like him and his message.
which 'message'? that of 'gradual and slow (but not really) change'? sure, people who bought into the
'we need an establishment candidate to win over the mythical droves of centrist voters, who just LOVE how washington works for them, and thus are just looking for the true champion of the status quo' narrative like him. those who actually want the system to change and represent them, will probably be able to figure him out, realise what he's actually saying (which is not a whole lot, while still trying to pander to both the left and the 'moderates'), and how full of hot air his speeches and replies to questions actually are... at least i would hope so.
