You can become prosperous without direct conflict. Claiming otherwise is merely being a coping defeatist. There is still only one side that decided to place foreign troops inside the borders of a sovereign nation. What is the point of democracy and sovereignty, if there is no resistance to breaches thereof? The problem is the idea of an actively expansionist nuclear state resorting to flashing its nukes when defied... that is geopolitical extortion. Extortion is unacceptable if you want to maintain respect and dignity. Just as some argue we should've considered Russian demands, they need to consider our demands of staying peaceful and not invade countries nor taunt the West and run behind nukes when we give a response.

This is a good metaphor. Pure evil can reside in a single person or entity, but it does not encompass an entire people. Pure evil is readily identified in film but nuance must be applied to the real world.
