What it means is to trust God but use common sense. It makes you think about your expectations and how we can miss the blessing or miss being blessed because our focus is on the way it appears to suit our expectations. You may not realize that your prayer has been answered because it didn't happen the way you had in mind.

A simpler explanation is that God isn't answering prayers at all.

Even if he was answering prayers since he never uses any methods that violate what we understand about the universe it would be indistinguishable from random chance.

You find your car keys in the next place you look.

Was it God? Or just a statistical certainty that you would eventually find your car keys immediately after praying at least once if you always pray to find your car keys?



Similarly

Pray for your son to get cured of his cancer.
His cancer goes into remission.
Let's say 90% of families pray when their kid has cancer. Statistically certain that some of them will go into remission, whether or not God was intervening.

Turns out that praying actually works. Whether it is coincidence or whether it is God, it turns out that when you pray to God things have a way of working out in the end.
