Quote
Ted Cruz: "Well I appreciate the kind and uplifting words of Senator Hirono. And I would also note that throughout her remarks she still did not say a negative word about Antifa nor has Democrat here. They instead engage in a political game where they depend-"
Hirono: {Unintelligible}
Ted Cruz: "You're welcome to say something negative about Antifa right now."
Hirono: "I think I've covered the subject quite well. You are not listening."
Ted Cruz: "Okay, she declined to speak. So that is the position of the Democratic Party.
I'd like to juxtapose this against the manufactured controversy of Charlottesville in 2017
Donald Trump repeatedly denounced
both white nationalists and Antifa militants, saying that extremism on both sides was bad. He explicitly condemned white supremacists and neo-nazis in the very quote that gets used all the time by people to misrepresent his "both sides" remarks by claiming he didn't single out neo-nazis. But he did. He explicitly condemned them.
https://i.imgur.com/BV0BGIN.jpgBut today Mazie Hirono and the other senate democrats all came out and said they denounce extremist violence. They didn't say it was 'on both sides'. They never condemned Antifa. They only singled out white supremacists, and tried to completely ignore Antifa, and when given numerous opportunities to condemn Antifa directly, they refused to do so. They wouldn't even give a 'both sides'
So Trump gets criticized for saying all political violence is bad and explicitly condemning both right-wing and left-wing violence, because people felt that even mentioning left-wing violence deflected from right-wing violence, despite the numerous instances at Charlottesville that day. But Mazie Hirono won't condemn political violence committed by her side at all. She refused. The Democrats have now staked out a position of tacit endorsement to Antifa and unofficially supporting their political violence by refusing to acknowledge it at all.
