What we would like is Russia to stop the war and leave Ukraine, an EU candidate state.
But since we cant have, the right thing could be to defend.
Usually the victim has 2 options.
-Run
-Fight back
Its up to Ukrainians to decide. We dont really force them to defend their country from the villains, rapists and murderers. What we can and will do is support the victim.
Some facts for you:
Russians are doing pretty bad on the war. They are on their way to bankruptcy. Now they have little money from oil sales. They bring older and older equipment to the war. They have little ammo.
On the other hand they do have more population that could potentially be mobilized, but every mobilization wave means a political risk and economical as well.
On the other hand Ukraine, as a democratic country, an EU candidate and NATO friend, gets financial and political support.
I could be wrong, but I believe Ukrainians are on a good way to stop Russians.

Ukraine had the change to end the war last year (April 1st I believe) but negotiations were ended and everything points to the West / NATO telling Zelensky to not accept the terms.

Nope, there was no chance the end the war back then.

Is Ukraine ruined? Not really. Of course the frontline is ruined, but in Russia free areas its fine. The life goes on there.
What is the other option for Ukrainians? Surrender to Russians, so they will be enslaved, conscripted into Russian army or sent to workcamps. Either way they would get into war, but now at least they choose the side they fight, they fight the villains, and get some chances of survival.
In a Putin army you dont have a chance to survive, he sends soldier to die. Not a great perspective.
Remember that jews were forced to work for nazists in the workcamps. I think I would rather die fighting nazi, than die anyway in the work camp.

Or become an overseer in a concentration camp. Should I mention that there were no such camps in Germany.
