https://www.jpost.com/diaspora/antisemitism/article-738940The people of Kiev are bravely voted to rename one of their streets to honor the Waffen-SS official Volodymyr Kubiyovych, who was involved in organizing the Ukrainian side of the Holocaust and the genocide of Poles and Jews
The people voted for it, and city council voted for it, but after the Israeli ambassador spoke up the mayor intervened and said he would stop the Nazi from being honored
just the ol casual "Ukrainians publicly supporting Nazis and making it very clear they are affiliated with Nazis, but then turning around and trying to pretend they aren't when it plays bad with their western allies"
It should not be news to anyone that Ukraine is Ultra Nationalist. This, like the recent leak, is not a secret ( unless the masses have collective amnesia, and all this comes as news to them ).
I think there was a similar conversation last year about a Nazi being applauded in Ukraine. A Mayor or something ? cant remember. Ukraine is currently in a war and that to my mind will simply reinforce nationalist sentiment.
As I read more about this leak, it looks like a story that just keeps on giving. I dont expect any real blowback though, similar to the facts outlined above. Its not going to change any foreign policy in and of itself.
This is a standford university paper, I linked it last year:
https://news.stanford.edu/2019/12/09/war-perceived-just-many-americans-excuse-war-criminals/ this ideology of "only our enemy commits war crimes" (and we saw recent stories re: beheadings, torture etc) is prevalent in times of war. Its irrelevant/inconvenient/no one cares if "the goodies" do it.
