Compare it to Monopoly. You can't play if you start at zero. You need to start with something. Give them a chance to compete with the upper-class and the motivation that they are able. A $1000 a month does not make people lazy, because that would not be enough. It just gives them a chance to compete. UBI is not socialism: it stimulates competition.
