Common sense went out of the window a long time ago
scenario 1: Russia lets Ukraine fall to the west because they calculated even if they won it would cost too much
scenario 2: Russia invades and wins eventually, splitting Ukraine and taking the eastern half, but it costs too much
both are a mild "win" for the US, from the lens of pre-war calculations of the Russian response. 1 was pie in the sky, 2 is where we are today.
Nukes aren't coming out, at least i hope. and both sides know it.
and of course its actually the military industrial complex, selling weapons to Ukraine or the US govt to give to Ukraine. either way they get paid off our tax dollars.
