I'm arguing that it doesn't matter if majority of voters believe one thing because if neither of the parties brings up that issue or cares to talk about it then those views will never be expressed politically.

It's like every election cycle, let's say there are 5 main things people care about. If both parties only focus on 3/5 issues is the democracy truly representative? So what happens subsequently is people vote for the candidate that best represents you on those 3 things and while the 2 are also important, there's nothing I or any of the millions of the voters can do about it.

In reality, we live in an oligarchy.

Then why not somehow reform US system by adding new parties? I don’t understand to be honest why historically there are only two. Eg in the Netherlands there is an assortment of parties for every taste and view. Animal lovers, immigrant haters, pro-business, anti-business, pro-climate, pro-farmers, whatever really. Nobody ever gets an absolute majority and once elections are done - they have to form a majority coalition to govern by compromising their programs to represent majority of interests of voters who votes them in. At least in theory.

Probably the better system but as to why, it's because the powers that be would have no interest in changing. Think about it, if you had centralized power in a dual system why would you want to relinquish that power to a 3rd party? You wouldn't as it's dilutive of your influence.

To edit though, even that system breaks down under political pressure though. For example, look at the tank thing in Germany. Majority of Germans did not want heavy weapons flowing into Ukraine but political pressure overruled it

agree with ofthevoid here re: you can vote but if all parties have the same policies and/or ignore certain pressing matters, then there is no platform for change.

and in such scenario's charismatic strongmen the likes of Trump get elected.

"i am on your side" "only i can fix your problems" "i will bring change" "i am not your enemy they are". preying on people's hopes and fears in a time of depression is a surefire way to wreck your country get elected.

The two party system isn't something regulated by the government. It's the natural result of a first past the post system.

No?

There at more than two parties in the United States. It's just that our system is a first to 50% system (first past the post) so you won't get more than two relevant parties
