trump simply doesnt understand how hungry for blood some recruits are. he used his rhetoric to make people angry enough to vote, and now it's backfiring by making a few skull crackers emerge from each group of reserves that are called in. trump only ever cared about votes, but he's painted himself into a corner where the only way to get votes is to make people mad. either its angry white people voting for a white america or white trolls voting for how mad he makes liberals.

It's not about looking good, it's about polarization, about making the other side look bad and scary. The actions by the federal police in Portland are a shitty way of getting there, but the general strategy makes sense for Trump in his current situation.

Trump needs to find a way so that right-leaning swing voters, particularly suburbanites, hold their nose and vote for him again although they are totally fed up by him. Leftists marching in the thousands, looting and vandalizing while demanding to completely upend the wealth and power structure of the country - that's something that could have this effect. It obviously wont work as long as the feds are the ones looking like violent and shady thugs instead of the protesters.
