Military shovels are different than civilian ones.
Military shovel is sharpened to be more deadly, to inflict more damage in close combat.
Military shovel has standarized size, so it can be used to measure distance.
Military shovel can be used as a pan to cook food on the Battlefield.
In the end, if soldier has a lot of dexterity, he can throw the shovel on his enemies, similar to how barbarian in D2 throws weapons.
So as you see, military shovels are special, you cant use just a standard civilian shovel.
Civilian shovels are harmless.
