Half of Korea wanted Marxist style of government and the other Half preferred the " West " version. That half that wanted the " West " Version was completely right because the US was considered the hero at that time which is absolutely true.
But things changed a lot of the past 60 years. The interference in Korean elections , the force sale of " poisoned " beef to South Korea, the " crimes " of American GI's towards South Korean citizens in South Korea have created Anti American sentiments in the past 30 odd years.
There is actually Anti American sentiments in Japan as well because of similar situations.
I can give you an explanation as to why. There are American troops in Europe and American troops in the East i.e South Korea and Japan. So why are there more Anti American sentiments in the East as compared to the West?
The Answer is rather simple actually.
Crimes committed in the West by American troops , the domestic and local laws will melt out the punishment by that country's law.
Those that are committed by American troops in the West , the sovereign country cannot punish the troops , the American military will just bring those offenders back to USA for tribunal, and most of the time they get very short sentences or they are being pardoned after 1 or 2 years in prison.
Yes this is something I am totally against.

Recently in the UK an american woman, wife of a diplomant. Was driving on the wrong side of the road completely.
Killed a local man then fled back to America.
EVENTUALLY she faced a trial here in the UK.
