Also what signals, if any, are there that Putin is the only thing preventing Russia from modernizing? and also what chance is there that is successor is any different?

The biggest disappointment is this had to happen at all, for Ukrainians, for Russians, for Europe and for the planet; Lets make no mistake the blame lies firmly at Putin's door.
But aside from Putin, Russia faces massive geopolitical and demographic problems.

There is no denying that under Putin's tenure Russian quality of life and GDPP has increased exponentially. Though that is heavily tied to the price of gas/oil over that period.
The economy is criminally undiversified, corruption is rife and so is inequality.

it would have been hard for him to drive the economy lower honestly. you're right, he rode a gas price increase up and did nothing to diversify. criminally undiversified is the perfect description.

it also reveals a core ignorance to russian politics. who will follow pootin? whoever HE chooses to take his place of course. also, the notion that you should wait to seek protection from the immediate threat you are facing until that threat simply doesn't exist any longer is just ridiculous on its face.
