The party that represented the majority of Ukrainians is banned. Its politicians hunted down and held for ransom by the state's secret police. Dissidents and journalists had bounties put on them, their murders counted as acheivements. The state seized control of the media, dissent outlawed, civilians encouraged to spy on friends and family to the Ukrainian intelligence services. BBC had an interview with a woman who was a former teacher, who reported former students and neighbors to be 'disappeared'.

None of this is remotely surprising for anyone with even a passing familiarity with the kind of puppet regimes and despots that the CIA has put in power before
