It should also be noted that Russia's foreign intelligence was without a doubt supporting the other side too. It's not like there's a huge imbalance or asymmetry, not like the nefarious U.S. pushed a peaceful, perfectly balanced country onto the brink of civil war. The situation in Ukraine was untenable in the long run anyway if you ask me.

Ukraine joining NATO was not realistically up for debate anytime soon, not unless they ceded Crimea and the DPR to Russia.
Also note that the whole situation blew up in 2014 after Ukraine tried to sign an association agreement with the EU, not NATO!
