Any presidential candidate - Republican, democrat, independent, or unknown - would go meet with ANYONE if they said they had damning info on their opponent. Bush would have sat down with Bin Laden to get info on John Kerry. Obama officials would have met with Putin himself to get info on Romney.

candidates don’t even have to go that far - just have the “unbiased” media run #fakenews tabloid trash in the weeks leading up to an election in order to sway and influence the outcome. the producing media sternly defends it for a few weeks in the face of near-unanimous scrutiny, then once the election passes does damage control
