Only chance vlad uses a nuke is if ukraine invades russia borders. Russia will continue throwing bodies at the war before attempting to fire a nuke.

If ukraine falls and poland becomes next, then nuclear war will become much more of a possibility.

Negative consequence of the use of such weapons would certainly outweigh any military benefits considering the low density of fighters / the size of Ukraine.
This would cement Putin as the aggressor and blacklist Russia's economy to incredible levels. It would make Russia a permanent pariah country (till Putin is out).
In the same way than the "scraps of paper", this would give no other choice than to continue to help Ukraine, Double, triple the assistance: up to trigger a super massive conventional response from NATO.

It all depends of Putin & Russia nuclear agression scale here. I know that french nuclear submarines are in alert mode and ready to glass it eventually. UK & US are more than certainly the same.
