Everyone knows that Trump is Mr. Law & Order, and so there's no pushback from the right when he veers left on police and criminal justice reform.

He's really the only politician right now who can get away with doing this.

This guy is such a political anomaly. I never know what to expect from him.

This executive order from our president is a great step.

It doesn't do much. We can't rely on the President to fix everything. Congress needs to do something.

Chunk Schumer was crying about the EO before the ink had even dried. how long has that guy been a lecherous member of Congress again? almost four decades?

I have to disagree. Polls currently show strong majorities of Americans supporting bans on chokeholds, ending qualified immunity, stopping transfer of military equipment to PDs, supporting the BLM movement and agreeing with various statements which all basically say "something is fundamentally broken with our police". (The one issue which was badly underwater was defunding the police though. I guess the public at large still has some common sense.) Similar trends can also be seen here on PaRD btw, when even "trump-y" right-wingers like excellence and myself support certain forms of police reform.

So in this particular moment in time, there is a ton of momentum for at least a moderate, common-sense police reform, even among a noticeable share of Republican voters. This is not one of those "only Nixon could go to China"-moments.

Agreed, they wouldnt pull this off. But that wasnt my point. My point is that even Republican leaders with less credit and standing with the base, say a Romney or a McCain, could have pulled it off and gotten away with it in the current environment.

“We need to weed out the bad cops — you know I hear these guys getting on television these politicians talking about ‘defunding the police department.’ First of all, that would have a negative effect on the black communities — who the black people gonna call, Ghostbusters?” Barkley asked. “Because they’re not gonna defund the police in the good white neighborhoods, so we need police reform.”

Yeah, if Christian churches actually stuck to the original teachings and spirit of their religion, they'd be a natural ally of far-left politics. But instead, across the centuries, they most of the time turned into allies of the status quo, or even teamed up with reactionary/authoritarian/inhumane forces.
