Thats not true at all, Russian revolution led to some of the provinces proclaiming self-independence in the form of new countries however these countries where never acknowledged by anyone at the time, there was no government there that actually controlled all the lands they claimed where under their control. Very dark times, but then order was restored in Moscow so in a natural succession order had to be restored in other territories - Russian lands that make up "Ukraine" where part of them. Ukraine means - Lands on the edge (Edge of Russian Empire) nothing more. Then Lenin decided that he needs "Republics" to move away from the "Imperial State" so he artificially created bunch of countries like Ukraine, Remade Belarus, Kazakhstan etc.

Nobody was ever repressed intentionally, by 1941 Kiev people where all fighting against Nazi invasion from Germany under the red banner. Only the newly acquired lands in the Western Ukraine started protesting once Russians liberated them then, they needed to be re-educated but simply was no time for that then. This time Russia must filter out and re-educate all Ukrainians who display any radicality whatsoever, and reunite the family!
