Which means for Cohen to claim this now, he would have to admit to perjurying himself and take a deal on that- which would be useless for prosecution since he'd be a proven liar.

Proven liars and other unethical people get used as witnesses by prosecutors all the time. See: Mike Flynn, Rick Gates, etc. Prosecutors can paint the narrative that Cohen was lying for his boss, but now he wants to come clean and tell the truth, and much of what he comes clean about won't just be his word vs Trump's word.
I'm not sure what to make of this story though... I'll wait til the dust settles to figure out what's going on.
