Yanukovych was elected in a legitimate election, with nobody in the east or west claiming otherwise. He was prior the governor of Donetsk, the most populous oblast, and like the people he represented he was more euroskeptic. It was both the will of the people who elected him, and in his own country's rational self interest, to reject the EU association agreement. It was a simple fact that the EU was less interested in Ukraine than Russia was, and Russia was in the process of creating economic leverage over the EU that circumvented Ukraine's leverage. Anyone could foresee the outcome- which is what we're living right now. The minority then overthrew the government elected by the majority and split the country in half.
There's nothing democratic about losing an election and losing on policy issues you care about, then deciding to overthrow the government in a coup so you can force your will upon the people you try to suppress with violence. That's the opposite of democracy.
And Nazis in Ukraine are so well represented in the military that they make up most of the reports of forces engaged with Russia right now. Just watching the Ukrainian side's propaganda is a stream of Nazis. Its not Russia making them slap SS symbols on everything. Russia didn't elect Nazis to local Ukrainian governments, but the Ukrainian right-wing nationalists did. There is no Nazi representation in the US military or government, there aren't any elected officials goosestepping under swastikas and active participation in a neo-nazi group is grounds for administration discharge from the armed forces. We don't tolerate them. Ukraine doesn't just tolerate them, they are at the front lines, being cheered on by Ukraine and armed by the US.
So again, how is anyone supposed to believe that the people who overthrew a legitimate democracy, banned the opposition, seized control of the media, are nazis and nazi affiliates- are representing truth justice and the american way?
