Yes ty: I had a question for you and even ferdia:
- What was your reaction when Rishi Sunak said "no" Scottish referendum ?
- How about doing (easy) comparisons with Ukraine and Russia ?
I like this question.
Rishi Sunak is the current head of the english goverment. England has alot of social problems (standard of living) and has a depressed economy. A previous leader of England, David Cameron, had a terrible habit of putting big things to a vote (Scottish Referendum, Brexit) where he envisaged the vote would always go his way. in this regard this would boost his ratings and he would please his party/resolve longstanding issues. He was convinced he would always win. The Queen was not impressed that he went for the Scottish referendum(For independance, which would be terrible for the UK) and that says alot. He won that vote. then he did the Brexit vote(to leave the EU). His own personal advisors told him in no uncertain terms that it was a bad idea to contemplate a brexit vote (putting all his eggs in one basket) because even if it looked guanteed that the vote would fail, if the unthinkable happened(and Brexit passed) he would be goosed. David Cameron had a self inflated ego and proceeded. He lost the vote and duly resigned and no one has seen him since. And he left England with Brexit, because of his ego. In this regard Ukraine are betting everything on winning this war and have not bothered to think about the cost or what would happen if they lost.
so to answer your question, for England it is the right thing for Rishi Sunak to say "no" to a scottish referedum, yesterday, today and tomorrow ( sorry i have not been looking, when did he say this ? ) as this would weaken the UK as a "united "kingdom"". I actually dont know if its good for scotland to seperate from england.
any view on this from an economic (or other) standpoint ? I accept the EU would pump money into scotland its just that Scotland and England have been joined to the hip for so long I wonder how scotland would fare apart from England (but probably, they would do well).
i trust this answers your question!
finally, even if Rishi Sunak says no, the scottish government, having already tasted a referendum will probably take this legal and we will hear more about this at the end of 2023. i think ultimately if england butters scotland up enough (if they are able to) the scottish vote may go away. if the standard of living continues to decline and the scottish government are able to convince their people that all their troubles are caused by england then I can see them pushing and winning a vote to leave the uk. this tactic was used for decades against the eu by certain individuals in england so im pretty sure the scotts would not mind to reverse engineer it.
