I understand the point your making, and to an extent I agree. But I think your missing my point. Democracy is not exactly Ukraine's priority right now; Making comparisons to the US is crazy.
When is the US getting invaded by a larger neighbor that threatens its existence?

Zelensky is democratically elected, and I'd be certain alot of Ukrainians would approve his leadership. He's the first leader that said no to fleeing the country, and put his own life on the line for Ukraine.

Do I agree with using the war to consolidate power? Obviously not. But talking about Zelensky becoming a dictator is like a fart in the wind. Especially when the poster child of dictatorships Vladimir Putin is invading Ukraine currently.

Countries getting agressed this way can't make elections, so mandates are prolongated: in the same way executive powers are extended. Don't forget that Zelensky got democratically elected.

Hitler's PARTY got les than 44% of votes (legislative elections) while Zelensky got elected as a president with 73% of votes. (executive/presidential elections)

The difference is that rather then elected and invading we are at a point of elected and defending. All I am saying is that in times of war certain powers will be increased, and to my mind that is what we are seeing at the moment. the long term risk is that this will undermine "democracy" for want of a better word, in ukraine. but it is pretty much irrelevant at the moment because ukraine is at war, defending against russia, so certain social liberties, and opposition, will be put to one side, for, what is deemed, the goal: ukraine's survival. if at the end of all this some laws/rules need to change and some people need to go, or w/e well, they can cross that bridge. all we are saying is if you remove opposing voices it can be a slippery slope sometimes into bad places.

Look, ultimately all we have to do is see and consider what is happening, determine why it is happening (or not), and then move on to the next aspect. most sane people should accept ukraine at this point in time can not in any way be considered a good place to be.
