Ukrainian army is getting desperate. German intelligence recently reported that the Ukrainian army is losing a three digit number of soldiers daily in Bakhmut.

Mc Gregor also recently stated that Ukraine's reserve brigades were fed into the Bakhmut meat grinder and that the Ukrainian brigades lost as much as 70% of their strength by the time they got pulled out / cycled.

But again, this directly undercuts both Russia's actions and Russia's messaging. When it came to economic sanctions, to oil embargos, to Russia closing the gas tap and so on, the Russian talking point always was "the West needs our energy supplies more than we need the West as buyers. We have plenty of other options, selling to China/India/the Saudis is np for us, but you, you are the ones who will be fucked."

Also, they must have known that there is a big risk of escalation and a collapse of trade as a result of their invasion of Ukraine. Heck, the Russians themselves had been preparing the weaponization of gas supplies for 15 years. If preserving their status as Europe's favorite supplier was among their top goals, then this whole war made no sense to begin with.

Do you think drafting Americans to go to war after the attack on Pearl Harbor was unjustified?

A country getting directly attacked by a foreign military is the textbook example for what a draft is made for. If there's any scenario in which we can expect able-bodied fighting-age men to defend their country, it has to be a literal invasion like the one Ukraine is currently experiencing. Also, aren't you usually among those arguing that the West has become weak and "pussified" and that we need more nationalism/patriotism?

That is possible. I think in terms of oil, Asia is equal or larger in terms of exports from Russia. For gas, it was around 75% of Russian exports that went to Europe pre-war.

I also believe there was a level of miscalculation on Putin's part. I don't think he expected the scale of sanctions/sacrifice the EU was willing to impose and absorb.
Likewise I don't think Russia and its military expected such a unified response in terms of supporting Ukraine; Something which is now in the balance.
