The military situation is actually very simple IMO.

This turned into an artillery war. Ukrainians holding the lines in east are severely outgunned when it comes to artillery and it's not even close, this is not pro Russian it's simple fact acknowledged by all sides really. Artillery and hardware can destroy but it's soldiers that hold and take territory. The reason why there haven't been massive territorial pushes by the Russians in territories which they ultimately really want (the donbass) is because those areas are saturated with many Ukrainian soldiers holed up and dug in. So instead of wasting tens of thousands trying rush trenches with holed up snipers and machine guns ww1 style, they are endlessly barraging those areas with artillery. As a defender you can only take so much of that type of punishment really. Last few weeks they finally started to actually send units i.e. Wagner to clear and take those territories which then allows their artillery to move up and once again rinse and repeat on new Ukrainian fortified positions.

The tanks would of been nice and would of helped but ultimately Ukraine even with NATO support is not able to match the volume and intensity of Russia's artillery, that's why we're seeing collapsing lines in the east. There was a sense of urgency with this meeting in Germany because western allies are seeing Ukrainian defenses collapsing in key fronts and I think any talks of counter offensive are going to be shelfed for at least several months.

Germany announces spring package of military aid to Ukraine worth €1 billion

the package will include 40 Marder infantry fighting vehicles, seven Gepard anti-aircraft self-propelled artillery systems, additional guided missiles for the Iris-T anti-aircraft missile system, and another Iris-T unit.

why would there be alot of explaining / heads on chopping block? ultmately this is ukraine's war. they will win or lose. i dont envisage many western heads to roll if ukraine loses.

Indeed. In my opinion that is an embarrassment for the German government.
Scholz is asleep at the wheel of the EU's largest and most populous economy, as was his predecessor in many ways.

That it has been said repeatedly for months that the tanks are not ready, only compounds the ineptitude.
