Yeah, like, somebody having a medical crisis can't be expected to get help from 911. What do you think? That we can just hook the 911 caller up with the ability to dispatch medical aid? What kind of system would that be!

How did you get that from what I responded to Handcuffs? You can't take what I say out of context.
What I said was in response to what Handcuffs said.

Yeah, what you said was a very easy thing to do. Hey 911 dispatchers, here's another party you can contact. Oh, and they're at the hospitals, the same hospitals we already dispatch from

He was talking about more than just medical folks. Which is WHY I said, it would be a logistics nightmare. It would mean the revamping and retraining of the entire 911 institution.
Iirc 911 is a function of FEMA and NOT a function of the police depts.

/e Or maybe it is a function of police depts. and FEMA has control over both.

/ee About 10 years ago I had to change my address, as did all those with xxx- 3/4's addresses etc. The notice came from the US Post Office, and when I asked why...they said FEMA just passed a law requiring "normal" addresses, because the 911 folks were getting confused.

Point being, is I think what the protesters want is the restructuring of 911. The police are well trained as far as I can see. Or do we need the Chris Rock video again?

Why would it require restructuring 911? It would literally just be funding mental health at hospitals and training the police to know the signs and when to turn them over to medical authorities instead of putting them in jail.

I think the police already have their plates full. If you want better and more accurate response to multiple situations, it would be far easier to retrain 911 folks.

Once again, if you want to understand what Handcuffs meant, you should quote him. Again, my post was a response to his.

This would take things off their plates lol. Having somebody to turn these people over to instead of having to house them in jails for the night would make their lives easier.

I'd bet $50 that Handcuffs wouldn't disagree with what I'm saying. I'm responding to your terrible criticism, because the infrastructure literally already exists.

That's NOT the point. You don't KNOW what he was thinking (nor do I) that's why I responded to him. :)

Well, you'll be happy to know...

Democrats pledge transformative change with police reform bill

The 134-page bill would take numerous steps, including allowing victims of misconduct to sue police for damages, ban chokeholds, require the use of body cameras by federal law enforcement officers, restrict lethal force, and facilitate independent investigations of police departments that show patterns of misconduct.

Just this paragraph, tells me that this bill won't pass. In fact it's a waste of paper and tax payer money.

As it currently stands, if/when someone sees someone who is homeless, in a mental health crisis, or high on substances, they often will call the police (if they call anyone) to try and take care of it.

However, the police are not trained, educated, or resourced as mental health/social services providers. So, this often results in the police either arresting people or simply making them move somewhere else. There's too much that we currently leave for the police to handle, and re-appropriating those funds not only to social services, but to social services who would then handle some of these responsibilities instead of the police, is as at the heart of 'defunding the police'.

why would anyone argue against this?
